The information technology (IT) department is sometimes culturally isolated from the rest of the departments of its parent company due to the huge informational chasm between their function and that of their coworkers. Most employees do not always comprehend the gravity of their technical issues, which in turn would be hard to properly explain in laypeople's terms. This communication gap has led to rather unfair stereotypes of IT people being spacey, detached, and somewhat condescending. In spite of (and in some ways because of) this split from regular workplace culture, IT cultures have developed into a recognizable subset of geek culture, brought about by the many humorous situations derived from everyday software trouble. Geek humor is also a common aspect of the IT environment, and coworkers who actually take the time to know their IT person may very well find common ground. To flourish, a company needs an IT department that is adaptive and proactive in introducing change. IT professionals must be encouraged to leave the comfort zone that far too often leads to complacency. They should take the initiative to adapt to new computing trends, lest they be left in the dust.
